CH. 12: AVOIDING DRUG MISUSE AND ABUSE NOTES
• Neurotransmitter- chemical hat relays messages between nerve cells or from
nerve cells to other body cells
• Psychoactive drugs- drugs that affect the brain chemistry and have the
potential to alter mood or behavior
Types of Drugs
• Prescription drugs
• OTC drugs
• Recreational Drugs
• Herbal Prescriptions
• Illegal Drugs
• Commercial Drugs
Routes of Drug Administration
• Inhalation0 introduction of drugs through the respiratory tract via niffing,
smoking, or inhaling
• Injection- intro of drugs into body via a hypodermic needle
• Transdermal- into of drugs through skin
• Suppositories- mixtures of drugs and a waxy medium (designed to melt at
body temp) that are inserted into vagina or anus
• Receptor Sites- specialized areas of cells and organs where chemicals,
enzymes, and other substances interact
Drug Interactions
• Polydrug Use-taking several medications, vitamins, recreational drugs, or
illegal drugs simultaneously
• Synergism- interaction of 2 or more drugs that produces more profound
effects than would be expected if the drugs were taken separately; also called
potentization
• Antagonism- in which 2 drugs compete for the same available recptors,
potentially blocking each other’s actions
• Inhibition- a drug interaction in which the effects of one drug are eliminated
or reduced by the presence of another drug at the same receptor site
• Intolerance- drug interaction in which the combonation of 2 or more durgs in
the body produces extremely unomfrotable reactions
• Cross-Tolerance- development of a physiological tolerance to ne drug that
reduces the effects of another similar drug
• Drug misuse- use of a drug for a purpose for which it was not intended
• Drug Abuse- excessive use of a drug
