Now, anthropology is recognized as a science and a humanities. 19th century it was assumed that non industrial societies lacked progress. Interpreted to make inferences about cultures of the past. Can tell you where and how people lived. What technologies they had and used and how they used it. Objects that have been made or modified by humans, typically of cultural or historical interest. Find piece of things and have to interpret to put it together to guess what it was used for. Includes prestige items adorn, expression, decorations, etc. Non portable evidence of human activities, such as a hole in the ground, foundations, dwellings, geoglyphs, burial sites (where bones could be found and then analyzed to learn about nutrition of a society or social stratification), etc.
