Burns are the 5th leading cause of death in toddlers. 3rd leading cause of death in school age children. Contact burns: hot space heaters, grills, camp fire coals, ovens. Ex: coffee, tea: hot bath water. Playing with matches & careless smoking is a major cause of residential fires. Electrical injuries: occur in young children inserting objects into outlets, in older children lightening strikes. Chemical burns: result from contact with acid & alkali. Radiation injury: occurs from medical therapies & uv light. Can be source of burn injury in younger children, usually <3 yrs: 8-12% of nat in us, scald burns are most common, followed by contact burns. Things to consider: distribution inconsistent with reported incident, injury consistent with child"s developmental level. Ex: ability to walk of infant & falling injuries: delay in seeking tx. Immersion, scald burns: well demarcated, no splash, stocking or glove like distribution. Contact burns: pattern type of burns, differentiate from accidental contact burns, non-accidental are.
