All primates make use of a relatively complex communication system with productivity and displacement. Study of the sounds and methods of construction used by a language. Kinesics: the study of how body movements are used in communication. Paralanguage: the study of the variety of sounds that accompany language. Sapir-whorf: hypothesis that language affects how we think, such as focal vocabulary. Power and language go hand in hand. The n word holds a lot of power and is highly cultural. Gender refers to the cultural roles played by the different sexes. Sex is to be male or female. There are many assumptions about how language and gender influence one another. Male language is often more forceful while female language is more submissive.
