Characteristics of culture: culture is learned and taught, culture is shared yet contested, culture is symbolic and material, cultures are subject to change. Enculturation: process of learning culture, first from parents and then from peers. Norm: an ideal cultural pattern that influences behavior in a particular society. Culture is inherently a group concept, and is shared. Is also contested such as contesting marriage norms". Culture is not static, therefore it changes. Value: culturally defined idea of what is true, right, and beautiful. Symbols: humans use symbols to organize and give meaning to the world, such as language.
