Document Summary

Stereotypes - a belief, cognitive (about persona attributes of a group of people, over-simplistic, often negative) Prejudice - negative judgement on group and its members (pre-formed attitude, feeling before having enough info) Discrimination - negative behavior (towards group or its members, unjustified) We tend to classify people into groups: ingroup/outgroup categorization. We tend to see people in an "us vs. them" pov. Part of the tribe, or the "other" or outsider. Outgroup homogeneity bias: perceive outgroup members to be more similar to each other than members of one"s in group. So essentially - "they are all the same/alike, we are diverse" Ingroup-outgroup bias: negative attitudes towards the "other" or outgroup than towards ingroup (us) - us vs. them, they are bad, we are good. We have the need to maintain/enhance our self esteem (keep feeling good and feel better about ourselves) Self esteem influenced by personal and social identities.
