BIOL 134 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Macrophage, Dissimilation, Chromosome
Document Summary
The transfer of genes to other members of a population. Animals can"t do this, but bacteria can! Part or all of a donor"s dna is transferred to a recipient cell. Often, part of the donor"s dna recombines with the recipient"s dna and becomes a permanent part of it. Has a thick capsule that prevents phagocytosis by macrophages. Lacks a capsule, is consumed by macrophages. Experiment 1: living encapsulated bacteria injected into mouse, mouse died, colonies of encapsulated bacteria were isolated from dead mouse. Experiment 2: living non-encapsulated bacteria injected into mouse, mouse remained healthy, a few colonies of non-encapsulated bacteria were isolated from mouse; phagocytes destroyed non-encapsulated bacteria. Experiment 3: heat killed encapsulated bacteria injected into mouse, mouse remained healthy, no colonies were isolated from mouse. Experiment 4: living non-encapsulated and heat killed bacteria injected into mouse, mouse died, colonies of encapsulated bacteria were isolated from dead mouse.
