1. a) Describe four symptoms of depression,
1) Changes in sleep patterns
2) Changes in appetite patterns
3) Complaints of a lower ability to think or concentrate.
4) Behavioral slowing or aggitation
b) describe the difference between intrinsic (organic) and
extrinsic depression?
Intrinsic- Internal
Extrinsic- External caused by environmental factors
c) describe the relationship of medications and 2 other possible
causes of extrinsic depression,
Some medications have side effects that can cause
individuals to feel depressed some of these medications include
stimulants, anti-psychotics and chemotherapeutic. Some
extrinsic factors to why one might become depressed in lack of
sun exposure, or personal issues such as the loss of a loved one
or marital issues.
d) describe the relationship of diseases and 2 other possible
causes of intrinsic depression
Depression is one of the most common complications
associated with disease and chronic illness. Ones self-esteem
can play a role in intrinsic depression especially when it is
associated with stress. A chemical imbalance in the brain can
cause intrinsic depression also.
2. a) Explain the differences between fluid and crystalline
intelligence.
Fluid intelligence is inherited through genetics. This is an
age-related decline in validity due to a decline in neurons and
their synaptic connections.
Crystalline increases by what you learn and is
environmentally influenced. As you learn you increase the

number of active neurons you possess which in turn increases
synaptic connections.
b) Explain why an older adults IQ may increase with aging and
is greater than when they were young? Older adults IQ’s can
increase because they are still learning new information. Wether
through additional schooling, work or life experience one is
constantly learning new things which increases your IQ.
c) what does this depend on? Memory loss can contribute to the
lowing of ones IQ. Also if the individual is not willing to learn
new material or try new things than they may not experience an
increase in knowledge keeping their IQ the same.
d) explain why fluid declines with aging (review the changes in
the brain)
There is an age related decline in fluid due to depleation of
neurons and synaptic connections.
3. a) Explain what is happening in the brain to reduce ‘ if you
do not use it you lose it” in relationship to the net loss of IQ.
If you learn and continue to work out your brain there is
less of a chance of lowering your IQ. If you do not exercise
your brain using previously learned information over time
you will forget it causing your IQ to drop. While learning
new material as well an reviewing previously learned
information can cause an increase or constant in your IQ.
b) explain, based on your answer, why there is not a major
decline in short-term memory in some older adults
Because some older adults enjoy reading, doing crossword
puzzles and socializing they are keeping their brain active and
exercised allowing them to maintain the use of their short-term
memory slowing down the deterioration of it.
c) would this be successful or usual aging? This would be
successful in slowing usual age progression for memory. Just as
if you stay more active physically it slows deterioration of your
body, the same is true with brain function.

4. Explain two age related changes for each of the following senses
and explain one age-associated change that may mimic
dementia or cause medical complications if no interventions.
USE THE PP and OUTLINE ON THE SENSES
a. vision age associated A reduction in depth perception.
Age related- a loss of peripheral vision and a decline in
seeing clearly. These can lead to a slowing in cognitive
function.
b. Hearing
age related buzzing, and increased sound threshold
age associated auditory deprivation where a individuals
hearing becomes isolated.
c. Taste and smell
age related reduced smell and taste
age associated individuals experience a lack of
eating causing poor nutrition.
d. Temperature
age related The threshold for feeling external
temperatures increases. Possible dehydration can occur.
Age associated Hypothermia can occur to becoming
over heated.
e. pain
age related increased pain threshold, and reduced pain
age associated - can mask diseases
f. thirst
age related reduced fluid intake, and increased thirst
threshold.
