GEY 3601 Lecture 13: HW13
1. a) Describe 4 age related changes in the mouth.
1. reduced secretion, causing dryness of the mouth
2. decrease in tooth enamel
3. Changes in taste buds which causes food to seem bland.
4. Gingival tissue (gums) recede – periodontal disease
b) Describe 4 age associated changes in the mouth,
1. a decrease in jaw bone
2. Reduction in salivary glands
3. Dysphagia – fear of choking
4. Dirty dentures can cause infection
c) explain how the age related changes increases the vulnerability to these age
associated changes)
Age related changes causes individuals to change the way they eat
and how much they eat. This increases ones vulnerability to age associated
changes. As one gets periodontal disease and the gums continue to recede it
allows teeth to be more exposed, between that than the reduction in tooth
enamel many people get dentures as their own natural teeth are no longer
able to do the work, putting them at greater risk of having dirty dentures that
lead to infection. Also with reduced saliva people are at greater risk of
choking as its harder to get food down smoothly.
2. Describe at least one of the age related changes for each one below in general
structure, mobility, and physiology of the digestive system that makes a
person vulnerable to the following age associated diseases (see text and
outline)..(see PP)
a. fecal impaction - There is a decrease in muscle tone and anal sphincter
b. diverticulItis – low muscle tone
c. peptic ulcer – Lining of the stomach thins
d. atrophic gastritis – Hydrochloric acid decreases
e. Food lodged in esophagus – smooth muscles weaken
f. curling of the esophagus – the curling prevents food from being able to
move back and be swallowed properly causing Aspiration pneumonia

Document Summary
Dirty dentures can cause infection c) explain how the age related changes increases the vulnerability to these age associated changes) Age related changes causes individuals to change the way they eat and how much they eat. This increases ones vulnerability to age associated changes. Infections in the mouth - making it painful or uncomfortable to eat. 2. cancer can cause numerous complications with diet, and varies depending on the type of cancer. It can cause one to develop sores that may make eating uncomfortable, cancerous tumors can block digestive tracks or colons not allowing things to process or exit the body properly. 3. improper absorption where the body may not be absorbing all of. Gastritis causes inflammation of the lining of the stomach which the nutrients it needs as food is being digested. can cause nausea, vomiting and a feeling of fullness making one not want to eat.
