Document Summary

Not necessary in every quantitative research study. Clear criteria, lot of emphasis on reducing bias. Specific idea, want to prove that it"s true. Using existing knowledge to make assumptions about what we may find in our data. Ways that we can collect data to help answer our research question. The researcher tries to control as much as possible. Limited control because participants chose their own behaviors. Safer to use when ethics are in question. Have inclusion and exclusion qualities established before moving into sampling. The researcher does not directly choose people. Everyone has an equal chance of being chosen to participate. Make sure that you have individuals who are representative from multiple groups. Often times used because it"s easy and convenient. Can miss certain groups of people - not totally generalized to the total population. Not our best strategy, but inexpensive, fast, and easy. Most commonly thought about with the nhanes. Overall goal: to generalize to the population.
