Look for typical structures of: macroconidia, microconidia, for some of these organisms, a limited amount of testing is done to distinguish, genus microsporum, shared characteristics, macroconidia are oval shaped, microconidia are rough , colony morphology. White cottony surface with deep yellow on reverse: microsporum canis, species microscopic morphology, macroconidia, more spindle shaped (tapered/pointed at both ends, thick and rough wall, more than 7 septa. Flat and velvety with a tan to olive green tinge: epidermophyton floccosum, the 1 pathogenic species in this genus, species microscopic morphology, macroconidia, club-shaped and smooth, 2-4 septa, occur singly or in groups. Flowers with petals although if you do see them individually, still ok (doesn"t discount the fact that this could be the species: no microconidia. Can also occur singly: genus trichophyton, shared characteristics, macroconidia long and cigar shaped, thin walled, blunt ends, have 2-10 septa (dependent on maturity, numerous microconidia, smooth and clavate (club shaped)
