Document Summary
Motivation: a process that influences the direction, persistence, and vigor of goal-directed behavior. Instinct: an inherited characteristic that automatically produces a particular response when the organism is exposed to a particular stimulus. Homeostasis: internal physiological equilibrium that requires: a sensory mechanism, a response system, a control center. If you were experiencing the tension of hunger would motivate you to find food and would bring you back to homeostasis state. Drives: internal tension that motivates an organism: problem: we often behave in ways that increase rather than reduce. Behavioral activation system (bas): produces movement toward positive goals in anticipation of pleasure. Behavioral inhibition system (bis): produces fear and escape/avoidant behaviors. Bas and bis involve different neurotransmitter systems and different brain regions. Expectancy x value theory: behavior is determined by: strength of the expectation that behavior will lead to a goal. Extrinsic motivation: preforming an activity to obtain an eternal reward or to avoid punishment: ex: coming to class because of grades/score.
