Sleep disorder: abnormal sleep patterns consistently occur, they cause subjective distress, and they interfere with a person"s daytime functioning. 2 categories of sleep disorders: dyssomnias: insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, and narcolepsy, parasomnias: involves undesirable arousal, behaviors, or events. Insomnia: regularly unable to fall asleep, stay asleep, or feel adequately rested by sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea: throat gets blocked/narrowed and person stops breathing momentarily, waking up. Sleep terror: single, terrifying sensation (etc. crushed, choking, falling, not like nightmare which is a progressive unpleasant dream story, usually occurs in stage 3 or 4 nrem sleep, first few hours. Sleepwalking and sleep-related eating disorder: sleepwalking: somnambulism, sleepwalks and eats compulsively, no memory next day. Rem sleep behavior disorder (rbd: brain fails to suppress voluntary actions during rem, sleeper verbally and physically responds to dream"s story. Not a sleeplike trance; rather more responsive to suggestions, vivid images and fantasies.
