Document Summary

Sleep is our most general state of consciousness. Approximately 1% of the total sleep time: stage-2, brain waves slow down more, but rapid bursts start to appear. Body is highly aroused, heart rate increases, respiration rate increases, genital arousal increases. But, when we look at the people in rem sleep, they look peaceful due to. Signals sent from the motor neurons to the muscles for muscle movement are blocked, so the sleeper doesn"t seem to be moving. Rem = 85% chance of dream report. Non rem (nrem) stages = 15-40% chances of dream report. Rem dream: overall longer and more like stories. Difficult to awaken during rem stage: nightly sleep pattern: Rem periods get longer as we move through night. There is a general pattern, but it sometimes varies from individual or in one person from night to night. There are multiple cycles, each of approximately 90 minutes.
