Document Summary

Credited w/establishing modern binomial nomenclature (freed nomenclature from the need to be descriptive and to give differentiae) Nomenclature = name calling : {nomin/nomen} = name + {cla/cal} = to shout, call. Proper definition of nomenclature = giving things names. Constructs a system of binomial designation (ie. two-name designation) Things are identified, generally, by 2 words: genus (capitalized) + species (lowercase) Previous naming systems consisted of a genus name, then a specific (long) description. Linnaeus realized when naming (useful name vs. need to describe it) Binomen/binomial (pl. binomina) is written so that they stand out from their surroundings (like in italics, but that"s not the only option) I believe that homo sapiens is the binomen for humans. Taxon (pl. taxa) = a unit of biological classification. Sometimes, it is desireable to name a taxon smaller than a species. Trinomina) are used to label taxa smaller than species (subspecies, varieties, etc. ) The only recognized taxon smaller than a species is the subspecies.
