CMN 134 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Intentionality, Fundamental Attribution Error, Negativity Bias
Document Summary
Accounts: explanations offered for inappropriate or unexpected behavior. Excuses: the person admits that the action in question occurred by claims not to be fully responsible for it. Appeal to accident (stuck on freeway because of traffic, late to exam) Appeal to biological drives (late to date because too busy getting ready / girl) Internal: the cause of the event rests with the actor. Taking too many units: external: the cause of the vent rests with the situation. Consistency: is the person"s behavior the same over time. I"m not a bad student, bad professor, bad class. Distinctiveness: is the behavior in question different in one situation than another. Consensus: do others perceive the situation similarly. We are likely to attribute the behavior to external causes when consistency, distinctiveness, and consensus are high. Stable: the cause of the event is always present.
