CMN 134 Lecture 7: CMN 134 - Lecture 7
Document Summary
Relational maintenance: communication and other actions that partners use to sustain a personal relationship at a standard and desirable level of functioning and satisfaction. Relationships will deteriorate unless efforts and made to keep the relationship in tact. Not all relationships are worthy of maintenance (physically, emotionally, sexually abused you should sever that relationship) Positivity*: showing your relational partner that you are happy about their presence in your life (strong positive correlation to relational satisfaction) Openness: being willing to engage in discussion about the relationships, be willing to self-disclose (one relational strategy you can have too much of, total openness is problematic) Assurances*: letting your partner know that you are committed to that relationship (you are very important to me, this relationship is important to me); strong positive correlation to relational commitment. Social network: you may not love their friends and family but you"re willing to hang out and invest time in their social circle.
