Chapter 1 the study of human development. The scope of the course: developmental science is physical, social, intellectual, and emotional changes children undergo from conception onwards. Interdisciplinary becoming international we need to look at cultural context: we want to understand the basis of human complexities, applied research to come up with ways to safeguard children"s wellbeing. Infancy to age 5: development implies growth and change. Prenatal to 9 months the most rapid phase of change; from a one-cell organism to a baby: will be able to adapt to the environment. Infancy and toddler big changes; motor, intellectual, language capacities grow; ties made with other humans: toddler: 1 year to 2 years; takes first steps. Early childhood body grows longer and leaner; proportions change; motor skills are refined; establish relationships and ties with peers; make-believe play (helps them to learn language, cognition, practice social situations); language develops sense of morality develops.
