Document Summary

Consonant descriptions : place/manner of articulation & voicing. A disturbance in air that radiates outward from a source. When this disturbance in air pressure hits our ear drums, we have heard a sound. Technically, every sound is different but we are able to classify sounds by grouping them into characters grouping them into characters. They are grouped on the basis of two criteria. Both deal w/ the study of speech sounds. Phonetics is the study of the physical properties of speech sounds. Phonology is the study of psychological representation of speech sounds, and the way that they interact with each other in a language. At all times, we are discussing sounds n not letters. Letters simply stand in for sounds, and sometimes do terrible job of it. Even if letters had a one to one relationship with phones, comparing sounds from different languages would be a problem.
