ANTHRO 2D Lecture 14: Week 7
Document Summary
Can give us new linguistic forms, transform old ones, and help shape how we think about language and speakers. Can provide, in uence, and spread ideologies about language. Each kind of media handles language in its own unique ways. Scandinavian languages quite close to one another (sweden, norway, denmark) Differences in phonology, vocab, grammar, and spelling but they are mutually intelligible. Government encourages people to use their dialects - no of cial pressure to lose dialect. Language is common topic on tv and radio. Media is a strong force for promoting and valuing, rather than diminishing, multiple spoken dialects. 2005: norway"s most popular dialect contest on radio. Valdresmal, dialect of valdres, won (small rural region on east-central norway) Younger people tend to cite the contest as the reason for why it"s valuable. Use of valdresmal had been on decline in 1990s in favor of oslo. Today use of valdres dialect is unmistakably cool.
