Australopithecus all extinct (only know this one, important; all discoveries found in southern africa) Homo habilis did not lead to homo erectus/sapiens. It was a dead end on the evolutionary tree. Anagenesis is progressive evolution of a species. We have a lot of overlap/dead ends in the evolutionary tree; it was a branching tree. Ape size brain (500 cc) and human body. Out of the trees although the forelimbs remained long. Named after beatle"s song: lucy in the sky with diamonds. Estimated at about 4 ft. tall, weighed 65 lbs. Altered shoulder and erect pelvis, which allowed for aiming and throwing, in ways chimps cannot. Male companion estimate 5 ft tall, weighed 90 lbs. A. garhi tool maker (for extracting bone marrow), meat eater. Best candidate for species directly ancestral to homo. Skeleton and teeth intermediate between a. farensis and h. erectus. Not currently thought to be a direct ancestor of h. sapiens.
