Geography of predicament : l. a. basin has 6% of california"s habitable land. But 1/600th of the state"s stream flow (there"s basically no water in the basin). A lot of money is being put into water conservation and people hit hardest by these measures are urban areas even though we only take 20%. Owens valley: the owens river gets some water into los angeles: this area is a dessert landscape populated with lots of cattle ranches, the great l. a. heist: william mulholland and the boys. He saw that we needed water and he bought up all the cattle ranches to control the water in the owens. Without this water, we would not have been able to develop, particularly the san fernando valley. 220 billion gallons a year and roughly half comes from ground water whereas the other half comes from other sources such as local rains, rivers, ect.
