CRM/LAW C106 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Child Abuse, Longitudinal Study, Social Rejection
Document Summary
Mental health: longitudinal studies show an early and stable trajectory of youth antisocial behavior. Characteristics of parents, their child, and social environment play a role in development and course of this trajectory: family influences. High risk of violence: harsh and rejecting parents. Interparental violence: child abuse and neglect, chaotic family life. Inconsistent discipline: poor monitoring by parents, predicts negative outcomes such as antisocial behaviors, substance abuse, mi problems, and health risk behaviors. Low risk of violence: close attachment bonds, effective and developmentally sensitive parenting, safe, stable, well managed, and well-regulated, neurobiological factors. Neurocognitive deficits, prenatal complications, genetic risks, and psychophysiological differences. Prior childhood experiences that result in chronic and traumatic stress can shape the development of the hpa axis: hpa axis is associated with aggression and impulsiveness, academic achievement. School readiness and academic achievement (school engagement) predict lower violence: personality traits and individual differences.
