Document Summary

The goods we discussed so far in this class are what known as private goods. In this chapter, we will extend our discussion to 3 other kind of goods. What separates these 4 types of goods are their rivalry in consumption and excludability. Rivalruy and consumption: one person use of a good diminishes other people use of the good. Excludability: a person can be excluded from using the good. E. g park vs private backyard: rivalry yes,, excludable : yes. Private goods ( normal goods we had been talking about, like water bootle: rivalry- yes, excludable: no. Common resources: fish in the sea, the 405, rivalry- no, excludavle-yes. Club goods: cable tv, uncongested toll roads, rivalry- no, excludable- no. Public goods: national defense, tornado siren. Public goods often fall victim to the free rider problem, where an invidual receives the benefit of the good without paying for it.
