Review virginia (joint stock company, rather a business venture/enterprise) Settled by christians who claimed a desire to christianize the indians. After the 1622 massacre and 1644 attack, no more talk to christianize the indians (turned to policies of extermination and harshness) Massachusetts bay colony (former new england colony, joint stock company) To transport a purer form of english society in the new world (to purify the church of england) Difficult through the first year but followed by prosperity. Settlers came in family units, were mostly puritans. Godly community, bible commonwealth, set an example for the world. God on top, then humans, then animals. Humans ranked as well, not all the same: based on wealth and christianity. God created the world for humans to control and dominate. Every part of the natural world sacred, the world was inhabited by a great variety of beings, each possessed a spiritual power, all lived together as a whole.
