MGMT 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Frederick Herzberg, Victor Vroom, William Ouchi
Document Summary
Intrinsic motivation- relies on the rewards by the work itself. Extrinsic motivation relies on external rewards (pay raises) Wasn"t terribly interested in the human side of production process. One of the most famous experiments conducted in hawthorne works in illinois during the late. Original goal was to find the optimal level of lighting to increase productivity. Productivity increased regardless of what the experimenters did. Hawthorne effect: people behave differently when they feel observed. Directed attention to the human side of motivation. Hierarchy of needs: theory of motivation based on unmet human needs from basic physiological needs to safety, social and esteem needs to self-actualization needs. Needs that have already been met do not motivate. If a need is filled, another higher-level need emerges. Only when these needs are met do you start needing the rest. Frederick herzberg asked workers to list things that motivated them most. Motivators: aspects of the job content that truly motivate and satisfy people (intrinsic)
