After slavery, jazz represented freedom for african american musicians who had limited options to make a living. Jazz is now a global music that has continued to represent freedom for a generations. Innovation is a constant element of jazz that allows it to meld with other forms of music and to evolve from the input of people of diverse cultural backgrounds.
