● Chicanos Walkout in the 1970s
● Chicano movement connected with Black movement and women’s movement
● Professor - first Mexican-American professor hired in UCI
● This year = is 50 years since MLK death, 50th anniversary of Kennedy death, 68’ has a
lot of meaning which will be brought to this course
● Legacy of Chicano movement
● Gap between poor and rich
● Gentrification: displacement of people by capital and development
● People fighting back against this, focusing on people of color’s struggles
● ‘68: Chicano political activities prior to ‘68, integrationists, MAPA
● Parents back then believed that through hard work, that you could achieve in this
country
● Not true, “American Dream nonsense”
● The 68’ were people were diverse (anti-white, feminists {challenged men, helped with
fundraising} and radicals)
● Different groups have different impacts on the Chicano movement
● “The original documentary of Chicano” by Jesus Nino 1972
● We have to be reminded that progress is slow, step by step
● Scholarly, analytical perspectives
● Education should not be market oriented
