Poll: people with a minor illness are about as likely as people with a serious illness to seek medical treatment= true. Recognition of symptoms: what determines whether or not we recognize the symptom, differences in our personality, neurotics (anxious and self-observant) recognize and report symptoms more quickly, hypochondriacs: people who always think something horrendous is going on. For ex: headache think its head cancer. Attentional differences: those who focus on themselves are more likely to report symptoms. Situational factors: when you are out and about or at a play, there are a lot of external stimuli that are distracting. That is more likely to move attention from the situation. However, if you are at home and bored, you are more likely to pay attention to these symptoms. Medical students" disease: medical students think they"re going to get whatever they"re studying at the time because youre studying it you"re more likely to notice them in your self or imagine it.
