Typically moving forward, although there is individual variation. Holding head up, etc --> being able to move extremities. Cortical maturation leads to advances; individual differences and genetics. No influence of experience in the past is now questioned. Specific progression has not been identified, but there is a general trajectory. Fine motor skills - abilities that require smaller motor skills. Pre-reaching - infants extending arms towards something of interest, and potentially trying to bat at it. 4 months - visual examination before grasping, mouthing. Accurate reaching not smooth trajectory until about 6 months (depends on posture, support) Palmer grasp (5-7 months) - more primitive grasp; grabbing a bunch of little things in their hand and trying to put it all in their mouth. Pincer grasp (8 months+) - a more sophisticated grasp. 6 months - adjust grip to properties of an object. 8-9 months - anticipation of properties of objects. 11 months - tool use and hand preference.
