PSY BEH 110D Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Autobiographical Memory, Explicit Memory, Procedural Memory
Document Summary
Mini-lecture 7-5: case study - memory in infancy. Consolidation - packaging memories into representations that are viable over the long term. Multiple memory systems perspective - different types of memory are handled by different regions in the brain. Explicit or declarative memory - consciously recalled and stated verbally. Implicit or procedural memory - affects behavior but not consciously. Relative paucity of memory from the first three years of life. Memory format change hypothesis - format of memory changes so that it"s impossible to access old format. Neural change hypothesis - late maturation of certain brain regions (i. e. hippocampus) limits early storage. Cueing hypothesis - differences in types of cues that trigger memory retrieval may limit later recollection. It"s the case that infants are able to form memories, but they are lost over time. Infant leg attached to mobile, and they learn that if they kick their leg, they are able to make the mobile move.
