Emotion we link closely to sex: love. Girl next door: geographically, more attracted to people closer to you with easier reach, several moments of contact, mere exposure effect: repeated exposure to any stimulus leads to greater liking of that stimulus. Birds of a feather: we like people who are like us. Age, ethnicity, ses: homophily: tendency to have contact with people equal in social status. We get positive reinforcements: matching phenomenon: tendency for people to choose partners alike in attitudes, intelligence, attractiveness, no similarity in attitudes from similarity in background characteristics. Physical attractiveness: women attractiveness related with popularity, most important factor, skin tone strongly related to attractiveness, more important to males evaluating females, modified by own feelings of worth. From laboratory to real life: matched for similar attitudes most attracted to each other. Growing proportion of population is single, so more are looking. Career pressures give people more efficient ways to look.
