Document Summary

The start of the bear" necessities unit. First step: maslow"s a theory of motivation (1943) Understanding how basic body functioning connects with well being. Move onto other factors from social/health sciences. Maslow"s goal: to explain what motivates us, i. e. , what compels us to action. Utility tied to what people are trying to get. With utility -> defined by the choice that you make. Can have motivations but not act on them & can act in ways that are not grounded in motivations that maslow discusses. There are other reasons for behavior besides these motivations. We commonly override what is motivating us & make other choices. If you act to get something then you must put utility value on that thing. Things that are preconditioned for living the good life. Perhaps not though maslow argues that we are motivated by our needs, & if these needs go unmet, we cannot be happy or satisfied.
