Countries" economies and societies are shaped by their position in the world capitalist system. Core countries: rich, developed countries (e. g. u. s. , japan, Periphery countries: poor, developing countries (e. g. afghanistan, malawi) Semi-periphery countries: middle-income countries (e. g. 2. Claim: the global division of labor is based on this core-periphery structure. Peripheral countries: production/export of cheap labor, raw materials, very low- tech products. Production/export of high profit, high-tech products and services. Semi-periphery countries: in between mix some cheap labor, raw materials, but also some high-tech. Claim: this global division of labor is highly unequal. It keeps poor countries poor and rich countries rich: By specializing in low-tech exports and cheap labor, periphery doesn"t get to develop high tech industries with high profits. The core uses cheap raw materials and labor from the periphery to produce high price goods (e. g. turning metals into phones!) Periphery has to buy these high price goods from the core!
