SOCIOL 41 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Arthur Schuster, Social Control
Document Summary
The focus is on how people negotiate the meaning of social life - during interactions they have with other poeple. Meaning can be derived via social interaction among people. People seek out goals - in formulating their plans of action it is a necessary requirement to establish cooperation with others. Consequences are in the real when people choose to define situations as real. Unlike animals, humans are not bound by instincts, however we have the option to create our very own symbols - arbitrary. Imagining our own appearance to other people. Our self-feelings that are created by our imagined judgement. The focus is on the conncection between larger societal conditions and the individual present. A social structure persists in patterns of action and interaction between people or social positions. A social role is a set of normative thought, feeling, and behavior (action) patterns structured around rights and obligations that are associated or leeched onto a particular status.
