Document Summary

Scale or raga is very important in indian culture bc it determines the mood of the day. More notes in one octave bc they have micro intervals. Three sets: playing strings, drone strings, sympathetic strings (picking up vibrations of the other two to sustain note) Raga: scalar patterns of five to nine notes; each with own character. This one is a morning raga with ascending and descending scales and ornaments such as small bends to notes. Raga solo always begins with descending motion then throughout the first three sections, soloist improvises. Indian music requires three players: melodic soloist, separate drone instrument and accompanying drummer. Raga are always accompanied by tambura (string instrument w 4-6 strings for drone) and tabla (two drum struck with fingertips and enters in fourth or final section of the raga when a meter is established) Form: improvisation of raga takes place over four sections. Alap: intro, soloist and tambura; no meter; starts with free rhythm.
