An lushan made many enemies in the court, however the emperor continued to favor him. An lushan was assassinated in 757, but rebellion continued under his son and another general for five more years. Xuanzong reigned for a few years, but had to step down in favor of his son. Unable to defeat the rebels decisively, the new emperor had to pardon them instead. In order to defeat the rebels, the tang allied with the uighurs, who demanded a high price for cooperation. Tang pardoned many rebels and appointed them military governors on the northern frontier. These governors were allowed to name their own state, become a regional power. Tang gradually losing power, although they remain in power for many years after their peak. When an lushan attacked chang"an, du fu was caught behind enemy lines, wrote poems. After the rebellion, the government no longer had the ability to carry out survey"s of land for the equal field system.
