Cpu only has a very very small amount of memory, makes it faster. Cpu says memory give me the number in spot 000. Cpu splits it into two pieces: 21 004, operation code and address circuity takes number 21 and activates sub circuit 21, where the electronics copy the number at the indicated memory address into the accumulator. Cpu stores that number in the accumulator, wiping out what was there before. no recollection of what was there before. Alu takes two numbers and it gives you back a number.
