GE CLST 73B Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Miranda Richardson, Halfway House, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
Document Summary
Main difference between novel and film in spider. In novel he speaks in film he never speaks. In novel spider is entirely first person narration and its very eloquent. Technique often used is voice over to convey this ^ We see adult schizophrenic spider in 1950s. We meet spider after hes beel released from instiution to go into halfway house. This halfway house is where the traumatic experience occurred. Spider knows theres a missing piece to his story so hes determined to figure out what happened. Spider had schizophrenic before traumatic experience-- courageous of him to try to face reality. In film we have two levels of flashbacks. One was the actual memories he experienced. The other was the memories he imagined (child is not present) Adult spider spins both into a narrative between his hallucinations and real memories. As an adult he is not fully convinced of the narrative he spun up.
