Refers to a particular discourse about globalization that has been especially influential (although not the only discourse) Tended to be associated with and prompts washington consensus or neoliberal policies (liberalizing trade, making it easier for goods to flow across borders, liberalizing finance) Generally defined by private rather than state ownership of at least a large portion of production of goods. Before 1500, markets were usually of a small number of luxury goods. People would produce what they needed themselves. Capitalism has been a world system since the beginning (late 1400s to 1500s) Involves production and exchange of goods between borders, and more people are dependant on these exchanges. Imperialism = the extension of the power of one state beyond its borders to influence other people, places, cultures.
