Document Summary

Cell organization examining role of membrane bound organelles & the endomembrane system: plasma membrane (info from last lecture): contains proteins, there are also internal cell membranes in eukaryotic cells. Information processing: ribosomes = site of protein synthesis, consists of rna called ribosomal rna & more than 50 other proteins, first initiates translation in the cytosol then: (either or) Rough er: synthesizes transmembrane proteins, proteins that end up in interior of organelles, & proteins destined for secretion. Cells that secrete large quantities of protein have extensive rer (ex. Gut cells that secrete digestive enzymes & pancreas cells that produce insulin) Transported to golgi complex to create secretory vehicle, lysosomes, or plasma membrane. Can be transported to nucleus, mitochondria, chloroplasts, or peroxisome (or simply stay in cytosol) No single peptide = stays in cytosol. Amino-terminal signal = goes to chloroplast or to mitochondrion.
