About EME:
● Ethnomusicological “world music ensemble”
● Music from over 500 years of (mainly) European sources
● We seek to introduce musicians from all backgrounds to new/old repertoires and new/old
ways of performing them
● You need not have any previous eperience with historical performance practice to
participate in the course.
● Mix of undergrad/graduate, alumni, and community members
Cantigas de Santa Maria
● Features:
○ 420 poems written in Medieval Galician
○ Accounts of miracles attributed to Virgin Mary
○ Songs of praise to Virgin Mary
○ Rich and detailed illuminations depicting folklife and instruments
○ Vast diversity of metrical forms
○ Early example of musical notation

○ Compiled by Alfonso X El Sabio, King of Galicia, Castile, and Leon (1221-1284)
○ Written in dialect reserved for poetry
○ Four manuscript codices survive
