PSYCH 10 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Henry Molaison, Hermann Ebbinghaus, Procedural Memory
Document Summary
Challenge: memory is not stored as a file that be retrieved by searching: stored as a web of associations: Priming= invisible memory bc it affects us unconsciously. May have biases & associations sorted in memory that also influence choices. Priming triggers a thread of associations that brings us to a concept: ex) spider feels movement in a web and follows it to find the bug. Mind works by having one idea trigger another maintains a flow of thought. Context: web of associations part of memory. Retrieve memories more easily when in the same context as when we formed the memory: ex. ) words learned underwater are better retrieved underwater. Memories are not just linked to external context: can also be tired to emotional state we were in when we formed the memory. Mood-congruent memory: tendency to selectively recall details that are consistent with one"s current mood: biased memory than reinforces our current mood.
