Disguises are a common topic in historic literature. Whether it is a physical disguise or an emotional/mental one. Doing so, she hopes to continue this romance while upholding her reserved and respectable lifestyle, which is nothing but yet another disguise. The story begins with the unnamed protagonist witnessing the ordeals of a prostitute in the theatre. While at first she is disturbed by her way of life, she begins to admire it and then to pursue it. She questions how different the prostitutes lifestyle is from her own with them both being sexually empowered women. In this first portion of the story, fantomina reminds me slightly of the wife of bath, especially during her encounter in the room with beauplaisir. She rents the room in order to gain a sense of control in what is otherwise an out of control situation.
