Week 6 lecture 14 anaerobic metabolism monday 10/3/16. + gas solubility is a function of temperature concentration & n2 pressure. Damage to whale rib as a consequence of n2 bubbles. Obstruction blood flow leading to bone death. To breathe at 20m, need compressed and pressurized air (to inflate lungs) The compression of atmospheric gas drives more n2 into tissues (fat- soluble) Fat absorbs 5 times as much n2 as does water. At surface, n2 comes out of solution, bubbles escape.
