PNB 2250 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Elephant Seal, Arthralgia, Anaerobic Respiration
Document Summary
Understand why animals use anaerobic metabolism & aerobic metabolism. Understand how animals dive to great depths. Understand animal adaptation in terms of changing metabolism. Nonoxidative anaerobic metabolism: low oxygen environments. Sea anemone: production of lactic acid (glycolysis) Aquatic life: below the 200-1000m levels, 0. 1 mg/l oxygen with little variation. Deep water oxygen surface gain minus bacterial loss. Affected by phosphate fertilizers leaching into water: abundance of life. Very little oxygen, very dark & cold. Week 6 lecture 14 anaerobic metabolism monday 10/3/16. + gas solubility is a function of temperature concentration & n2 pressure. Damage to whale rib as a consequence of n2 bubbles. Obstruction blood flow leading to bone death. To breathe at 20m, need compressed and pressurized air (to inflate lungs) The compression of atmospheric gas drives more n2 into tissues (fat- soluble) Fat absorbs 5 times as much n2 as does water. At surface, n2 comes out of solution, bubbles escape.
