Psyc 1103 lecture 10 self and identity, peer relations. Fifth stage: identity vs. role confusion (11-18 years) Individual acquires a sense of self identity, or may be confused about role in life. Adolescent tries on different roles to find what feels right. Having fully explored all options and making a commitment to what feels right. Exploring different options but not yet deciding on one. Ex: following parent"s career path instead of choosing one"s own. No exploration + no commitment: identity diffusion. Ex: no future career plans, no political views, etc. Peer relationships are associated with various outcomes in life. Measured by asking children to rate their peers, share who they like and do not like. Logistical challenges: pushback by schools (do not want children to share who they do not like, although kids will most likely do this anyway with each other) Associated with relational aggression (e. g. damaging a person"s reputation, threatening someone"s social status)
