Gerrit berckheyde, golden bend of the herengracht, 1671. Featured the houses in the innermost circle of amsterdam, the richest council members. City hall built in the heart of the city by the dam. 1648, the new town hall designs are finished. Also the 80 year war ends and the signing of the treaty of munster. Jan van der heyden, view of the dam square, 1673. Secular image prioritizing the state over the church by leaving the church tower out of the painting. Also had a gas lamp which van der heyden invented. Town hall is very similar in style to the campidoglio in rome, 1540-44. Artus quellinus, sculptor made scultpures representing prudence, freedom, and justice in cast bronze. More sculptures in the center triangle above the entrance. Economic power under freedom & peace is the imagery the statues convey on top of the town. Under justice: not by the king but by the republic.
