The transnational: writers, and their characters are not anchored in one singular place anymore. While yiyun li works through the transnational, she returns to america. But i think the call for multiple allegiances miss the very point of american possibility. Came to the us in 1996 to start a phd in immunology. She was an adult when she left her native china. Very invested in writing about china and america equally. Wrote instead; earned an mfa from iowa"s writer"s workshop.
