CLASS 40 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Castration Anxiety, Serifos, Hephaestion
Document Summary
Has greater resonance, told by others such as the athenians. Acrius, king of argos, gets oracle that says don"t let daughter have a child bc it will overthrow you. Won"t marry daughter (danae) off, locks her in a dungeon to make sure she won"t get pregnant. Rays of sunshine come into the dungeon: in disguise - zeus. Acrius creates a box, puts danae and baby perseus in the box to kill them. Does not kill them: sends them away; exposing the hero. *know the patterns of the hero: send off hero into wilderness and is raised by wolves. King: polydectes (much-reciever); he gets the box. Not a good king: wants to marry danae, wants to get rid of perseus. Sends perseus on a quest when he comes of age father-figure/authoritarian figure repressing the male (essence of growing up - freud) Seems like an easy way to get rid of him. On the way there, perseus has lots of well-known episodes.
