COMM 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Spinach, False Dilemma, Assertiveness
Document Summary
Small conflicts: who gets what candy on halloween (children) Larger conflicts: money issues (spending v. saving) We step in and out of different strategies depending on the context of the situation. Recognize when one strategy is appropriate in certain situations. Want to prevent or get away from conflict. Goal: to stay away from conflict entirely. Ignoring own needs and the needs of others. Non confrontational: if you"re upset at your roommate and you don"t say anything you are ignoring your own needs. Some avoiders think they"re selfless, but they aren"t there to be confronted either (ignoring needs of others) Not being home when your roommate is. Mentioning something else to deflect and distract from conflict. Can be times when maybe it is better to postpone. Ex: having a fight with s/o but also having a large family dinner. Most common in organizations: ex; putting things on syllabus so that students can"t argue about something later.
